“Being a Mets fan is like being in love with an alcoholic”

July 24th, 2009 No comments

Jim Breuer hits the ball with the good part of the bat in this quote from WMMR:

It’s like being in love with an alcoholic. It’s like you constantly defend her:

“Dude, your alcoholic friend is a mess.”

Nah, you just don’t know her like I do.”

How soon until opening day 2010?

Jamming With The Knighthawk

July 16th, 2009 No comments

Knighthawk, Pickabar and some lovely ladies.

In January, Dave (a/k/a Knighthawk) joined 45 Adapters MKII. Dave and I jammed at my apartment to work on the songs, but first we just played for fun. Here’s a recording of it that I found while looking for something else on my hard drive. I hit a few clams (ok a bunch), but I really dig it anyway.

Throw It Out

July 7th, 2009 No comments

When Sarah and I moved from Sunnyside to the city we had eleven telephone cords. Eleven. I had saved every single free cord bundled with phones. We recently had a big argument over how many vases we needed. Coincidentally, we had eleven. The point I’m trying to make is, we’re pack rats. But we’re trying to change.

I really envy the people who travel through life lightly. Possessions, especially knick knacks and souvenirs that you may never look at, are just added baggage to carry around. Is that Christmas ornament really so special that it’s worth paying rent to store it for the next 40 years? Do you really need to save all of those papers? Throw them out!

Throw It Out

Searching for a way to put it all in a little box
small enough to carry, but not big enough to drop
a lot of things will have to go, but all the things I love
will fit in the box I’m carrying yeah they’ll fit in like a glove

  you may be wondering
  you may ask yourself
look at the box I’m carrying
should I leave it on the shelf?

if you learn about real wealth
if you leave it on the shelf
  simplicity leads to mental health
rampant consumption (means) we’re consuming ourselves

    There’s a better life we’re entitled to
I’m blaming myself as much as I’m blaming you
simplify clean that pig sty just throw something out
I’m talking to everyone of you, just throw something out

Your mind is like a gutter, all clogged up with leaves
and the junk that you’ve collected won’t leave you room enough to breathe
it will hurt to let things go but the pain won’t last for long
and the silence that they leave behind will give you room to sing your songs

P.S. Today is the 32nd anniversary of Pickabarism. If you’d like to do something nice to celebrate, twitter a link to something you’ve read here or post a link to your Facebook stream. Or, buy me a Telecaster.

Here Comes The Sun

I went up on my roof to try and learn “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles. While I was up there, one of my neighbors came up to fly his awesome little electric helicopter.

I so want one of these, but I’m going to maintain a healthy disinterest for financial reasons. The last thing I need is another expensive hobby.

Nutmeg…no, we’re not friends.

July 3rd, 2009 2 comments

Can I quote one of my old song lyrics?

Friendship is spending time,
it’s both a means and end,
so if you’ve got no time,
then we’re no longer friends.

I’ve always had a lot of acquaintances. Drinking buddies, movie buddies, show buddies, scene buddies, work buddies, etc. If your definition of friendship is loose enough, you might argue that I’ve had hundreds of friends. Facebook suggests that I have 128 friends, which is a decent number I guess.

Of course, none of that changes the fact I spend most of my weekend nights at home with Sarah or drinking at a bar with one or two people. Most of these so-called friends have slotted me in to their calendar when it was convenient for them without any genuine interest in spending time with me. For a few months they may be very interested in quality time in Pickabarland. Then they get a new romantic interest, or they find a new hobby and poof I’m back to torturing Sarah with details about the usage of dynamic mics versus condenser mics on a Friday night.

Got nothing to do and no one is returning your calls? Ring up Gerrard!

Going to on awesome party with some of your school friends on Saturday? What’s a Gerrard?

As I’ve gotten older my interest in this “when you’ve got nothing else to do” level of friendship has dropped to almost nil. There’s no animosity behind that. I know that everyone is faced with more options to fill their free time than actual free time. I respect that. I make the same choices. Sometimes that means being honest with myself and admitting that I’m just not that interested in hanging out with someone.

I also understand that as people get older their priorities change. Instead of hanging out with friends drinking and running around the streets like kids, they may prefer a quiet evening with their significant other. Instead of hanging out a couple of times a week, they may prefer getting coffee once a month or every other month. It’s all part of growing up.

I respect that. I’m just not interested in it. I invest a lot in my friendships and I don’t think that investment is worthwhile for people who have me low on their list of priorities. No hard feelings, but I’d rather focus on the people who genuinely enjoy my company and want to share their most precious commodity with me. If I’m going to make sacrifices for people and do people favors, I want it to be for the people who do the same for me.

Even if that’s just four people.

Anyway, what do I lose? Either way it means weekend nights spent watching Law & Order marathons with Hoads.

The next Pickabar song will be more positive, but I needed to get one more polemic out of my system. For your pleasure:

Nutmeg

Do you remember when you were lonely?
I don’t believe that you really do.
I remember you always used to call me,
now it seems you hardly never do.

  Nutmeg!
  you’re a loser
  Nutmeg!
  we’re not friends
  Nutmeg!
  you’re just a user
  Nutmeg!
  we’re not friends

  no we’re not friends!
  no we’re not friends!

Remember all the fun we had last summer?
You were there for every barbecue.
I remember you were always down to party.
When the weather got cold so did you

  chorus

I’m not saying that I’m angry.
That’s just not the way i choose to live.
I’m not saying that you owe me,
my time is something that I freely give

  chorus

You put all of your eggs in one basket.
your picket fence dreams have almost all come true.
but don’t start counting chickens ’til they’ve hatched girl,
what happens if he breaks up with you?

  chorus

My birthday is on Tuesday, but I’m celebrating tonight. Please do me the favor of lifting a beverage of your choice at some point tonight. Toast to 32 years of…something.

GPS Finally works for the Samsung Saga on Verizon Wireless

July 2nd, 2009 No comments

So far I’m loving my the Samsung Saga which I got as a replacement for my series of broken Samsung i760s. Unfortunately, Verizon Wireless were up to there usual shenanigans and they purposefully disabled both GPS and Windows Live connectivity in the phone’s ROM. I had a copy of the Windows Live bits sitting around, but I was unable to find any kind of hack to get the GPS working. Verizon claimed that disabling the assisted GPS was necessary to ensure that customers blah blah blah, but it’s probably a safe bet that protecting their paid mapping service was the major motivating factor.

Well, Verizon finally got around to releasing a new ROM for the Samsung Saga with GPS enabled. I downloaded the setup files and ten minutes later I had GPS working in Google Maps Mobile.

Woot! I’m always getting lost, so this should be a real help.
